When the dead go unread, there’s gonna be trouble…
When the dead go unread because libraries are closing down, there’s gonna be trouble. Writers are turning in their graves, and the only thing that can save them is people reading their ‘booooooks’.
Dawn of the Unread started life as a reading flashmob, transformed into 16 online comics, became a game-based app to test literacy skills, was used as a main case study in Nottingham’s bid to become a UNESCO City of Literature, and ended up as a book.
A key innovation was embedding links within specific panels of the comic to provide contextual essays, enabling readers to go deeper should they wish. Likewise, the app gave users one chance to select an answer in a quiz, ensuring they read properly before answering.
Format
- 16 digital comics created by different artists and writers
- Embedded essays providing context to panels in the comic (click on stars)

- Social media accounts for key literary figures
- 100+ blogs at dawnoftheunread.wordpress.com

Pretty great post. I simply stumbled upon your blog and wished
to mention that I’ve truly enjoyed surfing around your blog
posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing to your rss feed and I
am hoping you write again soon!
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get set up?
I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Appreciate it
Many thanks for sharing this first-class piece. Very interesting ideas! (as always, btw)
I don’t even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was
good. I do not know who you are but certainly you’re
going to a famous blogger if you are not already 😉 Cheers!
This is a website that costs about £20 a year. You can get a free website through wordpress. It’s really simple to use and shouldn’t cost you anything more than time. You can pay for different types of format etc but even then it’s only around $50-100.
