I can’t believe the response I have received for the Chav piece. This has ranged from a future invitation to sit as an ‘academic’ on a television documentary, to being nominated Chav spokesperson for numerous students up and down the country who require help with research (which translates as help me write an essay). Thankfully this is all unpaid and in my own spare time, I’m not quite ready yet to attach a paypal donation link as seems to be obligatory with most websites.
I selected www.chavworld.co.uk to host the piece as it seemed more intent on presenting a balanced representation of this media constructed identity than other websites, which quite frankly, border on the fascistic in their quest to incite hatred. The reason I wrote the piece is that I am concerned that in labelling people as ‘chavs’ it may lead to a kind of self fulfilling prophesy in which negative reactions will create negative behaviour. The mass media is a contemptuous ruthless organism which will exploit and ridicule anything and anyone in its endless quest to fill up information space. This is what the public should really be wary of…
